"S" stands for Sharon

We have a very talented artist at school, who doubles as a kindergarten assistant during the day. She is making scrabble tiles and wooden pin angels with the color ribbon that represents the type of cancer or disease. Last year, I ordered "J" to represent my mom "Joan" with a white ribbon for lung cancer. I wore it everyday on my school lanyard.

A week before my diagnosis, I order 4 more scrabble tiles: "B" /gray ribbon for my Uncle Bob who had brain cancer, "J" /pink ribbon for my Aunt Judy who had breast cancer, "M" / yellow ribbon for my Aunt Marie who had bone cancer and "H" / red ribbon for my dad who had heart disease. Little did I know that soon I would be wearing "S" / purple ribbon for Sharon to represent pancreatic cancer. Truly didn't see my jewelry collection expanding with a new scrabble tile.

If you would like to order a scrabble tile or wooden angel, please email mary.longerbeam@lcps.org
She will be able to give you the details!

I haven't forgotten your story about your 1st tile for your mom and how it slipped into the wall at school to forever be behind your mailbox. I am going to do the same for you...Jen showed me "how" today and I'll be ordering one from Elaine and then your tile will be with your mom's tile forever behind the mailboxes at Catoctin!

S may stand for something else... someone that won't give up! I understand your frustration with your rotating pictures - I might have an idea to help you? What if you rotate the picture on your computer so it's the correct orientation and save it, then when you upload it will look the right way? I'll e-mail you your two pics turned to see if it makes a difference... if you want to play around. But don't ever get up! Love you! p.s. I have my purple scrabble tile right here with me, next to my heart!

Dear Sharon

That angel is not being obstinate! She is just reminding you to relax with your eyes closed for 5 minutes. ; ) And if you feel like crying - go ahead and and cry. Sometimes a good cry is very helpful and can clean away some stress. There is no shame in tears. I would love to have one of the purple S tiles. I will make it into a magnet and keep it on my fridge - the kitchen is indeed the heart of our home. I already have one tile shaped magnet on it and it reads: "Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart."

Dealing with cancer is as troubling and difficult as it gets and finding peaceful moments has got to feel impossible. This IS hard work. I know you have so many prayers and support sent your way for strength and courage and healing and positive energy and also that you have so much fight and determination inside of you, and I so support and join all of that, but if once in a while you feel a gentle little current come to be with you and encourage you to relax with your eyes closed for 5 minutes and to seek a moment of peace, it is from me. We all need such moments to recharge and to heal.

Hang in there. Hugs.

It's done...a purple "S" tile is forever in the walls of Catoctin along with the one for your mom! It's not the same around here without you...we all miss you!

....as I told you the day you came home from UVA, the S stands for SURVIVOR. "Shrink" is another S word these days!
